How to Customize the Slider

The slider in Startup Blog can be used to showcase any posts/pages. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to display either posts or pages and how to customize each slide's content.

How to choose the posts

  1. Visit the Customizer (Appearance → Customize)
  2. Click on the "Slider" section and then choose the "Content" section.
  3. By default, the slider will display your five latest posts. Update the "Number of posts in slider" setting to change the number of slides.
  4. If you'd like to feature a specific category, use the "Post Category" dropdown to select one.

How to choose the pages

Follow these steps to feature pages in the slider instead of posts.

  1. Switch the "Use posts or pages?" setting over to "Pages."
  2. A new dropdown selector will appear you can use to select any published page.
  3. To add more pages, click the "Add a Page" button.

You can add as many pages as you'd like to your slider following the above steps.

Customizing slider content

Every slide includes an excerpt. This is the same excerpt posts use on the blog. Please follow the tutorial here to learn about the three ways to customize excerpts.

Startup Blog also adds the "Excerpt" box below the editor for Pages. You can customize the slider excerpts for Pages the same way as for posts.

If you want to give a page a different title in the slider than displayed on the page, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the page in your dashboard
  2. Locate the Custom Fields box below the editor
  3. Enter "startup_blog_title" for the Name value
  4. Enter the custom title you want to use in the Value field
  5. Click the "Add Custom Field" button

You don't need to update the page once complete. The custom field will save and the new title will immediately begin displaying in the slider.

How to add images

The images in the slider are the Featured Images used in the post. Please follow this tutorial to learn how to add a Featured Image to any post or page.

How to change the button text

By default, the buttons in the slides say "Read more." To change the button text:

  1. Visit the Customizer (Appearance → Customize)
  2. Click on the "Slider" section and then choose the "Style" section.
  3. Use the "Button text" field to enter the new text.

The button text will now be updated across all slides.
