“Follow the plan outlined here and you can create your own website from scratch without writing any code for less than $300.”
You’ve got it made.
Starting a blog can be an amazing way to build your brand and generate an income online.
But do you want to know the biggest problem bloggers face?
Creating fresh content!
Continuously generating fresh ideas and writing new content is incredibly challenging, but tech bloggers are at an advantage.
By virtue of the niche, tech is always changing and evolving. It’s comparatively easier to write about an industry that is built on change.
All you need to do is get your site online so you can start publishing and building your audience.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you the best way to launch a new tech blog on your own domain. You’ll find all the tools you need and a variety of gorgeous designs to choose from.
Create a tech blog
I’ve got a few designs prepared for you, but here’s a look at the first one I’ll recommend.

That’s the Startup Blog theme. It’s one of our templates and it’s entirely free, so if you like it you can use it on your site right away.
But enough about the design for now! We’re getting ahead of ourselves.
The first step is to pick a domain name.
Find an awesome domain name
Coming up with a cool and memorable name is tricky.
What’s even tougher is finding a good name that’s still available to be registered.
One tip is to come up with something entirely original. Make up a new word for your brand rather than using some common keywords. Domain squatters aren’t likely to register nonsense words, so this can help a lot.
If you want more guidance, check out my guide on finding a domain name. There are a lot more practical tips inside.

But before you register that domain name, you’ll want to follow this next step.
Sign up for hosting
You need hosting for your site.
If you’re starting a tech blog, you probably already understand this. The host powers your site so that it loads when visitors arrive.
If you’re creating your first website (on your own domain), WordPress is the best option. And when it comes to hosting a WordPress site, Nexcess is excellent for beginners.

When you create an account with Nexcess, they’ll auto-generate a WordPress site for you.
You’ll get a “sandbox” site on a private URL where you can work on your website before launching it to the public. When you’re ready, you can go live on your domain in one click.
With your new WP site ready to go, you can move on to the fun part – the design!

Customize your site’s design
WordPress sites are endlessly customizable. In fact, that’s the best reason to use WordPress.
There are literally tens of thousands of themes available. Of course, the downside of all these options is that picking the right one can take forever!
Well, I’ve already done the hard work of sorting through these templates to pick out the top themes to consider for your site.
Here’s my first recommendation…
Startup Blog
The Startup Blog theme is one of our own templates and it’s completely free to use.

It has a responsive design that adapts fluidly to all screen sizes. Visitors will have no trouble using your site on laptops, tablets, or mobile devices.
The slider can feature your latest posts or select pages from your site which is perfect for highlighting your finest content. It also comes with custom colors, 50+ social media icons, and two sidebar layouts. Plus, there’s WooCommerce integration in case you want to sell products at some point.
The Getting Started Guide will take you through all the customization options included in Startup Blog.
More blog themes
While not specifically designed for tech blogs, this collection of the best WordPress blog themes has some top options for you.

Continue customizing
Choosing your theme is the most important step when it comes to customizing your site. However, it’s only the first step.
If you really want to personalize your site, check out our tutorial on beginner site customization steps. You’ll learn about the basic options included in WordPress and most themes.
Next, customizing your site from scratch is harder than editing a fully prepared website. Most themes have demo content you can import, and we have another guide for you on importing theme content.
With a good theme installed, the basic site customization steps complete, and the demo content imported, your site will be pretty close to finished. Any remaining style changes will come from options provided by your theme.
The last thing you’ll want to do is add a few essential plugins to complete your site. Our list of the most practical WordPress plugins includes seven must-haves for every WP site.
Launch your site
Let’s review the steps before you go.
First, you need to pick out a great domain name for yourself. Once you find an available name you like, signup for hosting. I recommend Nexcess.
Once you have the hosting setup, you’ll have a live WordPress site on the domain you selected. Then it’s time to pick out a theme and complete all the customization steps using the guides listed above. I recommend Startup Blog.
When you’re finished with those steps, you’ll be ready to launch!
Don’t worry about how many posts you have. Just get one awesome post published, and you’ll be ready to begin promotion.
